The Leuthold Couloir route takes climbers from the South Side of Mount
Hood, over Illumination Saddle and up through the hour glass chute called
Leuthold Couloir. You must hit the Couloir early in the morning to
avoid rock and ice fall. Once above the Couloir, you ascend through
the exposed Queens Chair area to the knife edge Summit Ridge. Climbers
then carefully cross the 1/2 mile ridge to the 11,239-foot summit.
