The "Hogsback":
A huge ridge of hard packed snow formed inside the Mount Hood crater by the winter snow and winds.  This ridge covers the Coalman Glacier and provides a steep, but relatively safe path up to the summit from the crater basin.

The sides of the Hogsback are quite steep and lead down toward the volcanic vents of the crater.  However, there is a suitable amount of level area on the ridge to allow climbing.
