We were witnesses to a fairly rare phenomenon called the "Specter of the Brocken".  This was when the triangular shadow of the mountain - Mount Hood in this case - was cast on the western horizon just after sunrise.  Many mountains create similar shadows, but it must be very clear to be seen.
