The "standard" South Side route of Mount Hood takes climbers up from Timberline Lodge (6,000 ft) to the 11,239-foot Summit.  Along the way, the route winds past Silcox Hut at 7,000 feet, past the top of the Palmer Snowfield at 8,540 feet and to Triangle Moraine at 9,600 feet.  From the staging are on a small plateau at the Moraine, the route gets steeper and heads up to Crater Rock and the base of the Hogsback - a snow ridge heading to the Summit.  Climbing the 30-35 degree Hogsback takes you over the treacherous Bergschrund crevasse (10,700 ft), through the Pearly Gates and to the Summit at 11,239 feet.
