During sunrise on a clear day, a triangular shadow - called "The Specter of the Brocken" - covers a huge swath of land to the Southwest of Mount Hood.  This shadow stretches almost to the Oregon Coast (100 miles away) and can only be seen like this from the air or from the mountain itself.
