The Best Ski Slopes in Oregon:
In April 2001, the IT Security team at Nike gathered in Sunriver, Oregon
(near Bend) for a "team building" weekend at the resort home
of a friend. One of the activities was a skiing trip to nearby
Mount Bachelor, widely known as the best ski area in Oregon - and
probably the entire Pacific Northwest.
The 9,065-foot Cascade Range mountain is drenched every Winter and
Spring by powdery snow, quite unlike the "Cascade
Concrete" variety of snow at other mountains in the area.
This soft snow draws many skiers to the rather remote Central Oregon
location along the Cascade Highway.
While my knee-challenged colleague John settled down in the lodge, I joined
co-workers and friends Steve and L.J. on the slopes for several hours of
great skiing. The snow was flying for most of the day and the wind
was whipping at the upper portions of the mountain - so much so, that we
did not dare venture to the summit. We went no higher than 8,000
feet that day due to the extreme weather conditions.
However, the weather was much more tolerable at the lower portions of
the mountain, so we enjoyed the powdery and plentiful snow for
hours. That was my first time at Mount Bachelor, but I will surely
make the 4-hour drive from Portland more often in the future.
