The western base of Mount Hood is rugged and off the beaten
path, but it provides a wealth of sights for the hikers willing
to get deep within the wilderness. In mid November 2000, I
was able to make an approximately 13-1/2 mile round trip that
took me from a base of 2,200 feet to around 5,500 feet above sea
level. Along the way, I saw beautiful Ramona Falls and
great views of the Mount Hood summit and the southern Washington
Cascades - especially Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams.
The snow went from a few inches at the trailhead to nearly 3
feet at the 5,500 foot level and I was just barely able to
navigate without the aid of snowshoes. However, the views
(as well as the workout) was well worth the effort, as you can
see in the resulting pictures. To view my photos, just
